I have recently joined the ranks of amateur digital SLR photographers and I was lucky to find Adobe's latest rendition of LightRoom (v2). The product allows one to engage in non-destructive edits to photos taken with a digital camera. This gives one the ability to quickly render a photo using a variety of processing techniques like changing the white balance, exposure, filters, etc of one's shots. The coolness comes in when one wants to snap back to the original photo if the adjustments don't work out. Doing so is as simple as a single click.
The program is best when used with Photoshop but it works quite well on its own. Photoshop integration allows one to send photos to and from Photoshop to be processed. To learn more about Lightroom one can check out this site (link). A free trial will help give you a good feel for how the program works and the Learning Center (link) will help you with mastering the product.
