UX280p Bluetooth Special

Most owners of the Sony VAIO UX280p have discovered by now that the Toshiba Bluetooth stack that is installed by default does not work too well. Many devices if not most are incompatible with the default Toshiba drivers. After a lot of research into this problem I found a solution.

A word of caution; before you do anything read this entire post.

On to the tasks! ->
1. If you want to feel more comfortable create a system restore point before continuing

2. Uninstall the Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba in Add/Remove Programs

3. Download the Bluetooth Monitor Program at this link

4. Execute the downloaded file and do not change the default extraction folder (C:)

5. Locate and run the file BtMon2Inst.exe after the extraction is complete(if no changes were made then this will be located in the folder C:\Toshiba\BTmonitor)

NOTE: The windows bluetooth drivers are now installed but one needs to continue following the next steps in order to activate the Toshiba hardware with the Windows drivers.

6. The system may now spot the UGX hardware. If it does then in the New Device Wizard choose the option to install the driver yourself. Select the Bluetooth Radios option. If all is well your system will recognize the UGX device.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING

7. If the new hardware is not spotted or if the system does not want to install the Bluetooth Radios driver (*THIS IS THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO*)-- You will need to open the Device Manager for your system

8. Locate the UGX device with the yellow exclamation point (it might also say USB) Right click on the icon and select properties, next go to the details tab and from the drop down list choose Hardware Ids (Keep the menu open because you will need to use the two lines of text in the next step)

9. Open the following file c:\WINDOWS\inf\bth.inf (short for Bluetooth INF)

10. Under the Device Section Start locate the section for Microsoft Wireless Transceivers:

eg. (mine looks like this)

[Microsoft.NT.5.1]
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth= BthUsb, USB\Vid_045e&Pid_007e
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 2.0= BthUsb, USB\Vid_045e&Pid_009c

11. Add in a name of your choosing, an equal sign, the BthUsb, and the hardware string associated with the UGX device:

eg. My sections added look like this (your hardware will likely have different ids):
...
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 3= BthUsb, USB\Vid_044e&Pid_300c&Rev_1915
Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 4= BthUsb, USB\Vid_044e&Pid_300c

12. Save the bth.inf file and close the properties window for the UGX hardware. Now rerun the device connectivity wizard (this time let Windows try to discover the driver on its own). You should now have windows Bluetooth drivers starting to get installed. If you get prompted with additional wizards continue to allow Windows to discover the drivers automatically. When finished all of your bluetooth should be working..

13. Go grab your Bluetooth hardware and try reinstalling them and re-pairing them with the UX280p

I hope this post helps some of the other VAIO owners out there. By the way I would suggest making a second system restore point. Also if you need to get your Toshiba drivers reinstalled you have the option of using a restore point from Windows or the restore utility that came with your VAIO.

Welcome to my Circle

It's amazing what one can do in this world. The ability to take the trivial and turn it inside out so that we are seeing not what is or what was, but what might have been. A journey of 1000 steps begins with one.
