TravelBlog: Roadside America

A miniature village is fashioned at this interesting pitstop. Located between Allentown and Harrisburg on route 22 this huge indoor facility replicates a typical mining/farming town in early 1800's America.

It's ironic that electricity runs the entire setup since in the time period, the electric grid was non-existent.

One can push a button to operate a windmill, trains, trolleys, a hot air balloon, a blacksmith, elevators, cable cars and sadly cows to the slaughter house.

I noted that Indians were relegated to the corner sections of the space. In almost an unwanted but technically necessary display they were depicted. The tiny section on Indian home life was badly constructed using flat wooden cutouts. Indians in a warlike posture were very detailed in an adjoining corner (as they were fighting a losing battle with soldiers).

In no way were contributions by Asians or Africans acknowledged. I thought this funny because in large part the labor from these communities powered the mining and farning industries.

Welcome to my Circle

It's amazing what one can do in this world. The ability to take the trivial and turn it inside out so that we are seeing not what is or what was, but what might have been. A journey of 1000 steps begins with one.

Light a candle and step into my circle.
