A recurring theme in Paul Auster's New York Trilogy is his references to Henry David Thoreau (link) and to the solitary experience of the characters. This solitude that is the subject of so much contemplation can in fact be applied to most folks. As we are working away in our cubicles for eight hours day (at a minimum) are we missing out on the essence of our true life?
This is a central question when one considers the effect of solitude and as such it can teach us a valuable lesson. Family can at times be burdensome (especially during the holidays) but it is critical that we hold onto each other. It is way too easy for one to lose oneself --- for a reality check just ask your local bum if they would mind sharing their story with you.
Our fall from grace was no less swift than the response you will receive.
